Partnerships

Data from the first respondents indicates that about 97% of the pregnant women in the seventh month has a marriage or cohabiting partner that is also the father of her child to be born. In 53 percent of the cases, the partner is the mother’s husband, and in 44 percent her cohabiting partner. This data reveals that having children as a single parent is still not much prevalent in Hungary. Most of the single parent families become such after birth, and the majority of out of wedlock children come from cohabiting relationships.

However, the situation is made more complex by some of the fathers being regularly away from their families. In about 7% of the cases, the parents live in a marriage or cohabiting relationship, but they regularly spend at least three nights a week apart from one another. The causes can include working abroad or unstable living conditions. Interestingly, this temporary absence can be observed in about the same percentage of marriages and cohabiting relationships.
